PUPIL PREMIUM AND SPORTS PREMIUM

Pupil Premium

At West SILC, Pupil Premium funding is used to remove barriers to learning and ensure that all disadvantaged pupils can access high-quality teaching, personalised support, and enriching experiences. Our strategy focuses on three key areas: high-quality teaching, targeted academic support, and wider wellbeing and engagement strategies.

How we use Pupil Premium

  • High-quality teaching & CPD:
Continued whole-school communication training, embedding Widgit, strengthening Intensive Interaction practice, targeted phonics training, and subject-specific development (including maths curriculum refinement and coaching from the Director of Maths).

  • Targeted intervention:
Reading Champion and Maths Champion support, one-to-one or small-group structured interventions, Speech and Language Therapy (SALT) input, and a strengthened OT–SALT referral system to ensure the right support at the right time.

  • Specialist therapeutic input:
Additional Occupational Therapy for sensory integration, staff training, and targeted regulation support for identified pupils.

  • Home tuition:
Provided for pupils unable to attend school, ensuring learning continuity and supporting emotional regulation.

  • Wider strategies for wellbeing and attendance:
Behaviour Support Worker intervention for SEMH needs, targeted attendance support for families, MOVE equipment to support physical development, hydrotherapy access, and increased cultural capital through trips, events and our Every Learner Should programme.

Why these approaches were chosen

Evidence from the EEF highlights the strong impact of high-quality CPD on pupil outcomes and the effectiveness of structured, well-delivered interventions. Research also shows the importance of communication, sensory regulation, and parental engagement in improving learning for pupils with SEND.

Our intended outcomes

  • Improved academic progress in reading, writing and maths.

  • Better communication, regulation and engagement in learning.

  • Sustained improvement in attendance for disadvantaged pupils.

  • Increased independence, confidence and opportunities for enrichment.

Pupil Premium Strategy 2025-26

Sports Premium

The Sports Premium is used at West SILC to ensure all pupils—especially those with complex needs—have access to high-quality physical development opportunities. Our aim is to promote physical health, motor development, confidence, wellbeing, and engagement through a broad range of PE experiences.

How the funding was spent

According to our DfE reporting submission (2025):

  • CPD for staff:
External PE CPD; upskilling staff in swimming; internal staff development.

  • Internal activities and enrichment:
Extra-curricular PE activities; top-up swimming lessons/broad aquatic opportunities; equipment and resources; educational platforms; membership fees.

  • External activities:
    external coaching staff.

Impact of Sports Premium

  • Increased access to swimming and hydrotherapy for pupils with the most complex physical needs.

  • Wider range of adapted sports and physical activities available across pathways.

  • Greater staff confidence in delivering high-quality PE, including swimming and sensory-physical development.

  • Improved pupil engagement, regulation, motor development, physical literacy and confidence.

  • Inclusive opportunities such as in-school clubs, therapeutic movement sessions, and community-based activities.

Sustainability

We are developing PE staff expertise through ongoing CPD to ensure long-term impact. The purchase of reusable equipment and development of internal programmes means pupils will continue to benefit beyond the funding period.
